This is the story of one of the most famous works in modern art. Some call it revolutionary, others say it is nonsense, but whatever your opinion of it, the story behind it may surprise you.
It takes us back to the early 20th century and the beginning of the avant-garde movements in the United States, where art was to become democratic. But of course some people challenged these ideas, and at the same time raised questions about the very nature of art.

I've been assembling a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle of this for the past two weeks. Apart from it being a nerve-wracking experience, I found respect for the small details all around the work. Almost every branch is painted with a different style, the flowers have different linings (some even have a kind of "psychedelic" aura around them), every stage of early flowering is included etc. I'm sad to hear he died only months after painting this: taints the theme of new beginnings a bit.

When I was in Rome I threw a coin in the fountain never thinking I'd ever be back. Two years later I did come back, so maybe the coin toss superstition really is true. It was for me. Great video and you explained everything very well.

Exquisite.... .absolutely breathtaking! Anyone who does not believe "the" Pieta was God - imspired, has never had a hammer and chisel in his hand, set before a block of marble! Can you imagine? "Look, Mom, what I made out of that block of matble in our backyard!" I love that you mentioned the stations......because, the Pieta , truly, does not make sense if you take it out of context. Why is Mary not hysterical, begging God to save her Son? She knows he will!!!!!!!
